It’s official – ‘utilise’ is NOT interchangeable for ‘use’.

Many people use the word ‘utilise’ to mean ‘use’. But actually, their meanings are different.

To utilise means to use an object for something other than its intended  purpose.

See these two examples:

“Please use the form on the website to register for the seminar”. This is the form’s intended use – so use it.

“He utilised his laptop as a pillow and lay his head on it”. He used the laptop for something other than its intended use.
